...in a roundabout kinda way! I decided to take my little girl to the nearby vlei to fly her kite over the weekend and oh what a treasure was in store for us both. We'd just started back towards home when we were joined by some young children from the squatter camp. At first they watched from the sidelines, but their excited chatter soon escalated to jubilant cheers as they began chasing the kite and trying to touch it as it darted about in the wind. Their unadulterated joy was tangible as they delighted in sharing our kite. Naturally, they each took turns flying it, and eventually, when our kite was looking a little worse-for-wear, we bade them farewell and trundled home with happy hearts.
It was a wonderful surprise lesson in gratitude for my daughter, who later expressed her desire to share some of her toys with those children.
It is so important, I believe, to bring our children up appreciating all the blessings they have instead of expecting everything to be handed to them on a platter. It's a real challenge in today's 'entitled generation', but one I'm up for...hopefully you are too!!
